Richard G Scott interview

Everyone should listen to this interview with Richard G. Scott. I always thought all the Apostles where married but Elder Scott has been single for about 14 years. He tells a very interesting story about his work with Admiral Rickover in the Navy. He did work at Oak Ridge Tennesee developing Nuclear fuel for Navy ships. Admiral Rickover got very angry with him because he quit to serve a mission.

For those too lazy to listen here is another version of the Rickover story.

At one time I worked on the immediate staff of a very hardworking, demanding, misunderstood man who became the father of the nuclear navy that provided great protection for the United States at a critical time in world conditions. His name is Hyman Rickover. I have great respect for him. After eleven years in that service, I received a call from the First Presidency to preside over a mission. I knew I would have to tell Admiral Rickover immediately. As I explained the call and that it would mean I would have to quit my job, he became rather excited. He said some unrepeatable things, broke the paper tray on his desk, and, in the comments that followed, clearly established two points.

"Scott, what you are doing in this defense program is so vital that it will take a year to replace you, so you can't go. Second, if you do go, you are a traitor to your country."

I said, "I can train my replacement in the two remaining months, and there won't be any risk to the country."

There was more conversation, and he finally said, "I never will talk to you again. I don't want to see you again. You are finished, not only here, but don't ever plan to work in the nuclear field again."

I responded, "Admiral, you can bar me from the office, but, unless you prevent me, I am going to turn this assignment over to another individual"

He asked, "What's the name of the man who wants you?"

I told him, "President David O. McKay."

He added, "If that's the way Mormons act, I don't want any of them working for me."

I knew he would try to call President McKay, who was ill, and that conversation would benefit no one. I also knew that in the Idaho Falls area there were many members of the Church whose families depended upon their working in our program. I didn't want to cause them harm. I also knew that I had been called by the Lord. I didn't know what to do. Then, the words of the song we sang tonight began to run through my mind: "Do what is right; let the consequence follow" (Hymns, 1985, no. 237). While I had never contacted a General Authority in my life, I had been interviewed by Elder Harold B. Lee, so I had a feeling to call him. I explained that the admiral would try to call President McKay and would make some negative comments, but everything was all right and I would be able to accept my call. While doing that, my heart kept saying, "Is this going to turn out all right or will somebody be innocently hurt who depends on our program for livelihood?" The song would come back: "Do what is right; let the consequence follow." True to his word, the admiral ceased to speak to me. When critical decisions had to be made, he would send a messenger or I would communicate through a third party. We accomplished the changeover.

On my last day in the office I asked for an appointment with him, and his secretary gasped. I went with a copy of the Book of Mormon in my hand. He looked at me and said, "Sit down, Scott. What do you have? I have tried every way I can to force you to change. What is it you have?"

There followed a very interesting, quiet conversation. There was more listening this time. He said he would read the Book of Mormon. Then something I never thought would occur happened. He added, "When you come back from the mission, I want you to call me. There will be a job for you."

Pug Dance

my lexapro has worn off.

For those who have seen renewed activity on the Skinner Report I will give an explanation. My lexapro is completely out of my system and I am no longer a Zombie. My dogmatic knee jerk conservatism is back in full force. In other news Marci and I have been moving our stuff to storage since we have to be out of our house in about 10 days. I have been living under an iron fisted dictatorship. I can not move even a single box without permission from the fuhrer. Marci has not been taking her medicine either so I get the full force of her Iron will. Think of the poor old man in "Keeping up Appearances" and you will get the picture. In other news Marci took Rachel and Morgan to see their fathers brother. He is from Hawaii. I mention this because he gave Marci a gift of Maxi pads. Yes that is right. He actually sells them or something. It's too bad Marci had a hysterectomy right? I am glad mom finally posted a picture of James on his birthday. I've decided to give him a pug puppy. Come and pick it up James before I go crazy from having them poop and then walk in it. I really don't like petting them for this reason. They are so cute though. I bet if James took a walk in the park with one he would attract a few females.

our applesauce gang

A couple of weeks ago, Julie and her kids and Cami T. (Julie's friend) and her family and I put up applesauce. We did about 63 Qts in one day. It was lots of work but it was also fun. We put up the victoria strainer outside and we had Cami's Dad's propane heater and cooked lots of them outside since it was faster. I thought you might enjoy seeing some pictures from our work. One of them is of me and the other is of Julie and Cami's husband Mica. He is wearing my apron and looks really cool.

newer Birthday picture

We were happy to have James here for his birthday. I hope that he had fun. I didn't convince him to shave but here is a birthday picture for you all to enjoy. Wish that the rest of you could have been here to celebrate with us. It was nice to have Julie and her kids here though.

Happy Birthday James

It was James Birthday on the 6th and I thought we shouldn't forget. I was busy preparing for a typhoon and so I didn't post anything but here is a late Happy Birthday to James. I also thought that some of you may enjoy the pictures.

funny passage from Alcatraz

somebody posted this on Amazon.com about "Alcatraz versus the knights of Crystallia". Very Funny.

"I glanced to the side, then jumped as I saw an enormous reptile crawling along the sides of the buildings towards us. Like a spider crawling across the front of a fence.

"Dragon!" I yelled, pointing.

"Brilliant observation, Smedley," Bastille noted besides me.

I was too alarmed to make an amazing comeback. Fortunately, I'm the author of this book, so I can rewrite history as I feel necessary. Let's try that again.

Ahem.

I glanced to the side, whereupon I noticed a dangerous scaly lizard slithering its way along the sides of the buildings, obviously bent on devouring us all.

"Behold!" I bellowed. " 'Tis a foul beast of the netherhells. Stand behind me and I shall slay it!"

"Oh, Alcatraz," Bastille breathed. "Thou art awesomeish and manlyish"

"Lo, let it be such," I said."

Elder Holland

Elder Holland is the man!!!!!

It was exactly six months ago that the Skinnertopia Blog was created. I remember posting about Elder Uchtdorff and his powerfull talk last April. I did not see any of the talks yesterday since I was working so I don't know if Elder Uchtdorff gave his usual powerful talk but I am guessing he did. Elder Holland gave a talk unlike any I have seen in Conference before. I think it had more to do with his demeanor than the words but Elder Holland made it clear that he believes in the Book of Mormon!! **the exclamation marks are his*** If anybody missed it I am sure you can watch it on the church website. Elder Holland did not beat around the bush in this talk. I really enjoyed President Monson's talk this morning about helping people and I hope I will figure out a way to give him a birthday present. I haven't read the special section on mormontimes.com about Elder Uchtdorff yet. I will have to go read it and learn about one of my hero's now.

P.S Austin Collie caught his first NFL touchdown today.

Steve's Birthday picture

I thought that you would enjoy seeing the birthday picture that Steve sent. It is hard to believe that he is getting so old. I guess we are all getting older. Steve called and Dad and I enjoyed talking to him. He is surely good and keeping in touch. HAPPY BIRTHDAY STEVE!

Sorry I'm a little late in posting this, especially since you're ahead of us in time. But I did think about you on your big day! Hope it was a fun one! Post some pics of all the festivities!

Servant to a Dark God, by John Brown

Servant to a Dark God, by John Brown

Go to the link above to read about a new book by a Utah Author. I do not know much about it except he is freinds with Brandon Sanderson and went to BYU with him. It looks like it might be a good book. It comes out on October 15th. Here is his Website.

Skinner Alert!!!

I heard Dad sent his Epistle out yesterday so we should be able to read his words of wisdom soon.

Lord of the Rings Memories

Well since nobody is writing anything on this blog I felt something stupid would be better than nothing. So here is what I was thinking about. I have quite a history with the Lord of the Rings Movies. I was not one of the people really excited about them when the first one came out because the cartoon version of "The Hobbit" was really stupid. Any cartoon that has a song called "Where there's a whip there is a way" is bound to be a really dumb one. I went to the first Movie with James in the Roosevelt Theater. I really had no idea what was going on except for the fact that there where some cool monsters and Aaragorn looked like an awesome character. My mind tends to wander when I listen to English accents so I was watching but not really listening. I had no idea what I had seen but it was fun. I saw "The Two towers" on Christmas Eve while I was at Disneyland. Again I had no idea what was going on but I enjoyed it and the fact that I was at Disneyland. *by myself** : ( For the Return of the King I felt being near the Atlantic Ocean might be better so I watched it with Mom in Norfolk Virginia. Dad was tired or something. I love that movie probably because I actually knew what was going on. My fourth memory of the lord of the Rings Movies was watching them on DVd with Kenson and Karisssa in Pittsburgh. I actually turned on the subtitles so I finally understood everything. I had some good times with them in that Apartment in Cranberry. We had lots of Pizza and chicken wings. I miss those days but I'll always have the memories.

Obama Anniversary

This looks kind of familiar. Remember Bill and Hillary after the Monica thing? Not good news for the two of them.
